BILL ANNOUNCES: Straydog Radio Show covering the events of Wednesday, April 13, 2016. Bill and Juana here, a couple of days later, and we are going to do the Wednesday report. There was a high of 78 degrees with a 70% chance of rain, but it never rained.

JUANA: It was a very, very sad day. Here we go again. I’ve been talking about Big Foot. Big Foot had a good night, but he wouldn’t eat anything in the morning. We even cooked him some scrambled eggs and sausage and stuff with no grease and he just turned his nose. He didn’t want anything. We knew that it was the end and it was, but we’ll talk about that later. We did get some photos.

For some reason, Wolfie was coughing. He didn’t look sick and his cough wasn’t like Portia’s or Purtis’ or Bug’s. Bug has a trachea problem. Wolfie’s cough sounded like kennel cough so I gave him some Tussin.

Wolfie does not look sick but his cough sounded like kennel cough so Juana gave him some Tussin.
Jacob was the walker in the Pat Arnold Park. He was playing ball with Leonardo.
Picture
Leonard is ready for Jacob to kick the ball. He loves his park time.
Everybody was busy doing all kinds of things. Stephanie was in the Shirley Beemer Park throwing the ball to Wup. There he is!
Picture
She would throw the ball and Wup would go running and bring the ball back to her.

It’s just too bad that Wup and Annie can’t get along. Annie has been residing in H2, because she has cancer. It breaks my heart! She has a tumor on her breast that ruptured and she also has tumors on her tail and on her other side. She can’t have surgery and have one tumor removed, because we can’t remove the others. They can’t operate on the tumor on her tail, because the cancer has already invaded her hips. We don’t want to put her through multiple surgeries. She’s 12 years old and she doesn’t deserve to go through surgeries and go through all of that pain and suffering and have her tail removed, because she is going to die anyway. We’ve been giving her pain medicine and antibiotics and we are doctoring the ruptured tumor. It is starting to heal from the inside out. I am happy about that. It’s sad that Wup was biting her. We had to separate Annie and Wup and they can’t be together anymore. They can’t even go to the park together. She’s living inside and he’s living outside and Wup just won’t accept her.
Our old Pokey is going to outlive us all. He’s 16 or 17 years old and he’s still going. He was already a year old, when I started at Straydog in 2001. He is one of Ms. Pat’s original dogs. Pokey and Rudy are the only dogs that we still have at the shelter from Ms. Pat’s originals. Blind and deaf Double Merle Jack is still with the Blantons and he is one of Ms. Pat’s originals. Jack is 13 years old and he’s young compared to Pokey.  Pokey is doing well, but he’s slowing down. He takes Tramadol, because he can’t take Rimadyl. It gave him renal problems, but the doctor said that it’s okay to keep him on Tramadol. He keeps going. He moves slowly, but he’s doing well. He seems happy.

There’s Jacob with Pokey and Bernie and Bunny. They live together and they all go to the park together. Bunny also goes to the park with Mr. Tuffy and he is another dog that we will probably lose soon.
Picture
Here's Jacob bringing the three doggies back to their kennel.
There’s Colt with Fatso and Miss B. We can’t say enough about Colt, he is blind and deaf and he is such a wonderful dog. He knows what’s going on all of the time. He’s incredible!
Picture
Colt is so incredible! He may be blind and deaf but he can smell anything and he knows what's going on all of the time.
When I got to the shelter, everybody was ready for Big Foot. It was a bad day and we had to lose Big Foot. Stephanie was trying to get him to eat. She tried all morning and he wouldn’t eat anything. She cried all morning. Like I’ve said on Facebook, Big Foot was one of everybody’s favorites. He was such a handsome, big, gentle and loving dog and he was so sweet. I can’t believe he was never adopted. We have so many black Labs and they are such good dogs. For some reason, people don’t want them.  He was so beautiful and his coat was so beautiful. His feet weren’t that big but, when he was a puppy, they were huge compared to his body. When we saw him, we said, “Big Foot!” He eventually grew into his feet, but we still called him Big Foot. I remember it, like it was yesterday. I found Big Foot and Snickers about a block from Straydog. They were just walking down the road.  I called them and they followed me. I kept telling them to, “Go home; go home.” They were so gorgeous and I didn’t think they were strays. They kept following me. They didn’t have microchips or collars. We tried to find their owners and we never did. We had those two beautiful dogs here at Straydog from that day on.
Here I am giving Wolfie his cough medicine.
Picture
BILL: Does he like it?

JUANA:
No, I was holding his mouth open somehow, for him to swallow it.
There’s everybody following Big Foot to the car.
Picture
BILL:  It was very sad for all of the employees to have to go through this.
Picture
Snickers seemed to know. She dug herself a scoopy hole and lay in it. She was very sad.
JUANA: My son Gordie and Dr. James were at Morton Clinic and helped me help him cross. He was tired and ready to go. He went quickly. He fell asleep in my arms and he’s in a better place.

Our work must go on. We were all very sad here at Straydog, but we have many other dogs, who need us and we have to stay strong for them. We have to continue our mission.
Here’s Miss Talena in the Beemer Park. Ronnie was holding her and Stephanie was trying to trim her nails.
Picture
There’s Wayne caregiving Big Boy, Rosita and Purtis.
Picture
There’s Jacob bringing Rudy and Spice to the park. Like we said before, Rudy is one of Ms. Pat’s original dogs.

It was a very, very difficult, sad day.

BILL: We’ll be back soon with another report from Straydog.

BILL ANNOUNCES: Straydog Radio Show covering the events of Tuesday, April 12, 2016. Bill and Juana here and it’s several days later. Go ahead, Juana.

JUANA: Before we go to Tuesday, I want to talk about Monday, April 11, 2016. When I can, I take off on Sundays and Mondays and George takes over. It just so happened that this Sunday and Monday I was off. Something really bad happened on Monday and I had to go to the vet and say my last goodbyes to Portia, who had already passed on.

As far as I know, we had a visitor on Monday. She drove all of the way from Allen to Straydog, which is about 100 miles, to visit Elizabeth. Elizabeth is a Chow. I told her that Elizabeth wasn’t ready to be adopted, because she still is in treatment for heartworms. Elizabeth’s named used to be Shag. This lady still wanted to visit her and take an application.

Now I want to talk about Portia. George had Portia in her temporary kennel outside. When we took her to the vet on Friday, she was doing fine. She wasn’t coughing and she was taking her medicine. I was really shocked that we lost her, because her heart just stopped. She was actually pooping, when she passed. She just fell over and that was it. George had to take the pooper out of her. I just couldn’t believe it and I was really surprised. I went to Morton Clinic and I hugged her and kissed her, but she was already gone. I asked the doctor why this happened. She had been there on Friday. Dr. James did an autopsy and said that her heart was very, very large and very weak. She had a lot of fluid and it was just a heart attack. She was only four or five years old. She had had heartworms and all kinds of medical issues. She was diabetic. I have to say that the little bit of time that she had with us was the best time of her life. Rescuers Nina and Angie brought her to us, because she had special needs and we loved her. It was very sad to lose her.

On Tuesday, George and Ronnie called to tell me that Big Foot wouldn’t eat his morning meal. He was walking very slowly and they could see that he wasn’t doing well at all. Our crew went to hug him and kiss him, because I told George that I wanted to take him to Morton Clinic. I wanted to see if his mass had gotten any bigger or his blood work was worse or if it was his time and to see what we should do.
Picture
Big Foot was walking very slowly today and we could see that he wasn’t doing well at all.
I also wanted Luigi to go to the clinic that day, because he was limping. He’d been on Rimadyl and he was still limping really badly and I feared that he had torn his ACL. Unfortunately, that’s what it turned out to be. There’s Ronnie putting Luigi in the van.

Luigi is on his way to Morton Clinic to see if he has torn his ACL.
There’s Big Foot in the crate in the van. He’s looking very sad and you can see that he wasn’t feeling well.

We are all so sad for our boy Big Foot.
George Jr. was the walker of the day in Pat Arnold Park. He was taking Friendly and Polly back to their kennel from the park.

There’s George bringing Chubs and Hannah to the park.

Wayne was the walker in the Beemer Park. He’s taking Ranger and Beauty to the park slowly but surely.
Picture
Stephanie, Ronnie and DJ were the kennel crew and they followed our normal routine.

Stephanie rakes Jimmy's kennel, he is making sure he keeps his distance.
Blind Cesar was walking on a leash and doing very well. The doctor did an awesome job of TPLO knee surgery on him and he’s recovering and he’s doing so wonderfully well.
Picture
When George got back from the clinic with Big Foot and Luigi, Luigi was still groggy. They anesthetized him, so they could take x-rays of his knee. They found out that he had torn his ACL and he needs surgery. Ronnie and Stephanie carried his crate. Luigi was still sleeping.

The doctor called me with the results on Big Foot. He had a little pancreatitis, his enzymes levels were elevated and he was starting to get complications of cancer. I asked him if there was any shot or anything to help him feel better and the doctor said that he would do that. The doctor said that we had to make a decision, because he wasn’t going to get any better. I had already asked the crew to say goodbye to him. But it was so hard for me to decide, because we had just lost Portia. I decided it wasn’t about me and I would be strong for Big Foot. When I got to the shelter, he ran to me and he was running and playing. I just couldn’t take him. The shot that the doctor gave him must have made him feel better. I phoned the doctor and told the doctor that if I hadn’t seen him, I wouldn’t have believed it. I am sorry I didn’t get pictures of how well he was doing. Our overnight crewmember Brandy asked, “Was Big Foot like this?” I told her that he hadn’t been felling well and he had been lying down, but now he was a lot perkier. I just couldn’t bring myself to take him on Tuesday, because he was acting like he wasn’t ready to go.  I thought that tomorrow might be the day and it was. We’ll talk about that tomorrow.
We went back to our normal routine. There’s a beautiful picture of Stephanie greeting and kissing Newly.

That was our Tuesday.

BILL: We’ll be back shortly with another report from Straydog.

It Was A Very Sad Day Yesterday Here At Straydog
Below is a message from Juana Arnold

Hello Family and Friends,
Yesterday was one of the hardest days in my life. I try to avoid my sadness but is impossible to cover what had happened. We lost not One but Two of our wonderful doggies! Sweet girl Portia and Gracie (who was adopted several months ago). Portia's heart just said no more and she passed on, into a forever dream and now she is running free. Gracie was getting slower and not wanting to eat, her new mamma took her to the vet and said it was time to let go of Gracie. My heart aches with pain but trying to hold on to our belief... they are both running free of pain! R.I.P. Our both sweet sweet girls we will remember y'all forever in our hearts...
