BILL ANNOUNCES: Straydog Radio Show covering the events of Tuesday, September 13, 2016. Bill and Juana here with the Tuesday report.

JUANA: We are trying to get caught up on our radio shows. This is going to be a long report, because it was the day that Dr. Erica Dumeyer, our vet, came to our shelter and vaccinated most of our dogs. She didn’t vaccinate the dogs, who were recently rescued and already vaccinated. The doctor has come to our shelter every year for the last five or six years and vaccinates all of our dogs. That saves us a tremendous amount of money. Plus Dr. James Morton also helps us by charging the bare minimum for the medicine, drugs and injections. We can’t thank them enough, because this saves us a lot of money.

On Monday evening, Maci called and said that they were at the Dollar Store in Athens and a lady had a barking little puppy. They asked why this cute little, scruffy puppy was there. The lady said that a customer had left the puppy in the bathroom and the lady didn’t know what to do with him. Obviously, they took him and brought him to Straydog and we took him in. He is at our shelter now and he’s a cute, little fluffy thing. He kind of looks like a long-haired Dachshund with big ears and big paws. He’s only about three months old and he has hookworms and roundworms and he will have to be quarantined.

This cute little fluffy guy is now safe with us after being left in a bathroom at the Dollar Store.
Dr. Dumeyer came to Straydog about 8:00 in the morning and, while we were waiting for her, we all did our chores. We got a lot of pictures of our crew working in the kennels. We still had some dogs with ringworm and we got pictures of bleach buckets and all that. Ronnie was weed eating.

Maci cleans out one of the pools in her section.

Jacob prepares one of the bleach buckets we dip our feet in when we go in and out of kennels where there is ringworm.

Lots of weed eating to do around here. Ronnie is working on this never ending summer job.
Then we took pictures of Dr. Dumeyer, Lacie and Ashley. Ashley is also a vet tech. She’s not in uniform, because it was her day off. She wanted to come to volunteer and help Straydog and see our shelter and what we do. We really appreciate her help.
Picture
I had the doctor help me check all of our older dogs first. Here she is checking Josie. We’ve been worried about her because she seemed so bloated and we thought it was fluid from her heart. When your heart and other organs start to fail, there’s an accumulation of fluids. The doctor said it wasn’t fluids, but it was  a mass. She aspirated her, to see if any fluids came out and there wasn’t any fluid. She wanted to take Josie to the clinic and do a sonogram. We were all worried about Josie and didn’t want to hear it, but we will have to deal with it.

Josie is a bit bloated and Dr. Dumeyer wants to take her to the clinic for a sonogram.

There she is checking Ranger and Beauty.
The doctor agreed that Ranger is doing much better. Ranger can see and he is doing better after his stroke and the seizures he had. He’s just a senior dog. That’s a beautiful picture of Beauty.

And then she listens to Beauty's heart.

Then she checked Pepper. He had one seizure a long time ago and hasn’t had one since. He’s not on any medication and he’s doing well. She was checking all of the older dogs.
Picture
Dr. Dumeyer started giving rabies vaccinations to the inside dogs and then the outside dogs. Lacie helped her check the dogs. There’s Purtis getting his nails trimmed. I was helping Dr. Dumeyer and Lacie and Ashley were checking other dogs.

Purtis is being such a good boy while Dr. Dumeyer trims his nails.

And Beto is being a good boy too while Ashley gives him his vaccination shot.
I took the doctor to H2 to see Mike, Fancy and Sam and all of the doggies there.

She found ear infections, tumors and all kinds of things and the thing on Tally’s leg.

It was an exciting and a very long day. We had some excitement with Fred, Diesel and Jimmy. The doctor brought a pole with a loop on it with her and we didn’t have to anesthetize any of the dogs, except for Jimmy. We just couldn’t trap Jimmy.  We anesthetized Jimmy. We used the pole to inject him with the sedative first and then we finally got him done.

The doctor finally got them all done. It was a long and successful day. A few dogs weren’t vaccinated, because they were just too old, like Pokey, Amy, Cheyenne and Rudy. They aren’t going anywhere and they won’t be biting anyone. They barely have any teeth.

BILL: We’ll be back soon with another report from Straydog.

BILL ANNOUNCES: Straydog Radio Show covering the events Sunday, September 4, 2016. Bill and Juana here and we are catching up.

JUANA: I was there.

BILL: You were working on Sunday. I don’t remember why, but you were.

JUANA: Because we do. This is Billy caregiving Ozzie in his kennel.

Jacob was the dumping the water from the pool in Pat Arnold’s Park.

This is such a beautiful picture of Minnie.
Picture
She’s the momma-dog. Barbara was coming the next day to adopt Minnie. Minnie has recovered from her heartworm treatments and we found good homes for two of her babies. They were the only ones, who survived, from Minnie’s five puppies. The two surviving pups were both females and they were adopted together. Now we hope that Minnie gets along with Barbara’s female dog. At this time, I would say that she probably won’t get along with another female. She’s just not a friendly dog, but you never know. Through this month of September, you will see that we have tried Minnie with several different male and female puppies and adult dogs. Minnie wasn’t happy with any of them and she went after them. I told Barbara that Minnie might not get along with her dog. Barbara said that she would also like to try Mickey with her dog. We rescued pregnant Minnie and Mickey together. They were both tied to a tree and abandoned with no food or water. Barbara spent her vacation volunteering with us and she fell in love with Mickey and Momma Minnie, who was nursing at the time. But Barbara has a female dog and Minnie might not get along with her. Barbara is also willing to meet other black dogs. She knows how difficult it is to find good homes for black dogs. Barbara’s dog Daisy looks like a beautiful, smaller version of Minnie.
There’s Maci caregiving Luigi in his kennel.
Picture
I was doctoring some doggies and I am doctoring Tabitha there.
Picture
She didn’t have ringworm. She had a hot spot on her neck, like Lucy’s. It’s not as bad as Lucy’s hot spot. I was putting Tea Tree Ointment on it, before Jacob and I took the ringworm dogs to the doctor.
This is MoMo. You can see his chest and how bad his ringworm was. It was horrible!
Picture
I was doctoring Skylar and Jacob was holding him.
Picture
George also had ringworm. I doctored him there.
Picture
Ty was already healed and I was checking him after I doctored Naomi.
Picture
At this point, the ringworm situation didn’t look good. But again, it wasn’t nearly as bad as it has been in other years. We haven’t had to stop Adoption Days this year. In years past, we had to stop adoption events and walks to the park altogether. We will just keep on doctoring the dogs and bleaching everything. And it’s not that bad this year, thank God!

BILL: We’ll be back shortly with another report from Straydog.
