BILL ANNOUNCES: Straydog Radio Show covering the events of Tuesday, September 13, 2016. Bill and Juana here with the Tuesday report.
JUANA: We are trying to get caught up on our radio shows. This is going to be a long report, because it was the day that Dr. Erica Dumeyer, our vet, came to our shelter and vaccinated most of our dogs. She didn’t vaccinate the dogs, who were recently rescued and already vaccinated. The doctor has come to our shelter every year for the last five or six years and vaccinates all of our dogs. That saves us a tremendous amount of money. Plus Dr. James Morton also helps us by charging the bare minimum for the medicine, drugs and injections. We can’t thank them enough, because this saves us a lot of money.

On Monday evening, Maci called and said that they were at the Dollar Store in Athens and a lady had a barking little puppy. They asked why this cute little, scruffy puppy was there. The lady said that a customer had left the puppy in the bathroom and the lady didn’t know what to do with him. Obviously, they took him and brought him to Straydog and we took him in. He is at our shelter now and he’s a cute, little fluffy thing. He kind of looks like a long-haired Dachshund with big ears and big paws. He’s only about three months old and he has hookworms and roundworms and he will have to be quarantined.
Dr. Dumeyer came to Straydog about 8:00 in the morning and, while we were waiting for her, we all did our chores. We got a lot of pictures of our crew working in the kennels. We still had some dogs with ringworm and we got pictures of bleach buckets and all that. Ronnie was weed eating.
Then we took pictures of Dr. Dumeyer, Lacie and Ashley. Ashley is also a vet tech. She’s not in uniform, because it was her day off. She wanted to come to volunteer and help Straydog and see our shelter and what we do. We really appreciate her help.
I had the doctor help me check all of our older dogs first. Here she is checking Josie. We’ve been worried about her because she seemed so bloated and we thought it was fluid from her heart. When your heart and other organs start to fail, there’s an accumulation of fluids. The doctor said it wasn’t fluids, but it was a mass. She aspirated her, to see if any fluids came out and there wasn’t any fluid. She wanted to take Josie to the clinic and do a sonogram. We were all worried about Josie and didn’t want to hear it, but we will have to deal with it.
There she is checking Ranger and Beauty. The doctor agreed that Ranger is doing much better. Ranger can see and he is doing better after his stroke and the seizures he had. He’s just a senior dog. That’s a beautiful picture of Beauty.
Then she checked Pepper. He had one seizure a long time ago and hasn’t had one since. He’s not on any medication and he’s doing well. She was checking all of the older dogs.
Dr. Dumeyer started giving rabies vaccinations to the inside dogs and then the outside dogs. Lacie helped her check the dogs. There’s Purtis getting his nails trimmed. I was helping Dr. Dumeyer and Lacie and Ashley were checking other dogs.
I took the doctor to H2 to see Mike, Fancy and Sam and all of the doggies there.
She found ear infections, tumors and all kinds of things and the thing on Tally’s leg.
It was an exciting and a very long day. We had some excitement with Fred, Diesel and Jimmy. The doctor brought a pole with a loop on it with her and we didn’t have to anesthetize any of the dogs, except for Jimmy. We just couldn’t trap Jimmy. We anesthetized Jimmy. We used the pole to inject him with the sedative first and then we finally got him done.
The doctor finally got them all done. It was a long and successful day. A few dogs weren’t vaccinated, because they were just too old, like Pokey, Amy, Cheyenne and Rudy. They aren’t going anywhere and they won’t be biting anyone. They barely have any teeth.
