Caregiver Ronnie reports:
Life at Straydog from a dog's perspective. Meet Snickers!

Picture

"I've been a shelter dog most of my life. This is a great place to live. There's always people around who care. I'm never hungry, I'm always taken care of, BUT I feel like I'm missing something. I'm missing YOU. When your family votes to get a dog as a gift for Christmas, opt to rescue! I can't promise you we'll change the world, but I can promise you we'll change yours. Read on to find out what my day is like.

Every morning at 6 a.m. we eat our first meal. Since Straydog houses many rescues, there are many bowls filled & hand delivered to us! After the first meal, everything settles down. We can get a little rambunctious waiting, but with full bellies we find a nice spot in our kennel to lie down & begin the day.

Walks start at 6:30 a.m. and this is one of the most important activities! It's a opportunity to leave our kennels and visit one of our two large parks where we get 10-12 minutes of fun exercise. Some of us play ball, some of us swim, and some of us just get loved.

Between 6 - 7 a.m. our caregivers begin cleaning kennels for us. No matter how much we destroy them, they selflessly attend to the task at hand, we love our caregivers! They begin filling in holes we may have dug and building up dirt along the fences. This helps to deter us from digging, escaping our kennels, and possibly getting hurt.

Next comes fresh water! Our caregivers clean & scrub our buckets to assure all germs & dirt are removed. I can't wait to run over when they are full to get a clean, cool drink! The rest of the time they spend raking. Raking turns over stagnant dirt that may be present, and then our kennels look really nice! Kennel by kennel, section by section, they work until every kennel is perfect.

After that is lunch for the crew. I sit & watch while they eat. My mouth waters, but I know as soon as they're done with their meal it's time for caregiving & treats! (Pssst can you keep a secret? Sometimes I stare at them with my puppy eyes and they share a bite of their lunch, but that's our secret!)

Caregiving is 11 - 1:00 p,m, This is my favorite time! The crew spends quality time with each of us, brushing, doing our nails, and most importantly BELLY RUBS. We also get plenty of treats and undivided attention. Kennel by kennel, section by section, they make sure they cater to the needs of every rescue!

1:20 p.m. Evening meals begin. The aroma of food coming from the kennel office is amazing!

Between 2 - 2:15 p.m. they begin to feed us again, section by section, until we've all been fed.

3:00 p.m. is the saddest part of the day for me. I watch as the crew slowly begins to gather their belongings. It's time for everyone to leave. I sometimes sit and wonder what if it was me they were going home to, I know how much they take care of me. How wonderful would that be to have a loving home with people who care as much as they do?

Caregiver Chelsea reports:
Every here and there Bug has those days where she isn't interested in much of anything, including eating her food. This girl is one of the most food motivated dogs ever, so seeing her ignore her afternoon meal always worries me. With the weather all over the place lately, I can only assume that her joints are bothering her and that she'll be back to her normal social self in no time.

Caregiver Chelsea reports:                                                                                                  Cadet recently moved in with a new kennel mate on the opposite side of the shelter, which means she goes to a different park for her walk. While she seems rather comfortable and confident in her new kennel, she was not acting the same way in the park at all. As soon as we stepped foot into the park she tucked her tail and clung to my side. I hope she adjusts quickly so she can enjoy her park time again.

Caregiver Chelsea reports:
With plenty of time to caregive today I decided Minnie needed some serious brushing. Her coat requires a lot of maintenance so I used different brushes to work through her tangles and undercoat. She could not have been any more cooperative or patience and she looked absolutely gorgeous when I was done.

Caregiver Destiny reports:

Mister Brody is becoming much nicer now that he’s getting older. He used to only let a select few people pick up his food bowl (he’s very food aggressive) but here lately more of the crew has been able to do it with very minimal problems. He’s very sweet whenever food isn’t involved, he kind of reminds me of a cat and he only wants attention when he wants attention. We love our Bro Bro regardless though.

Caregiver Ronnie reports:
Today was spent preparing for the arrival of Straydog’s newest acquisition (no,no,no not a cute Shar Pei) but a new building. It'll be our sanctuary's 3rd building and will be used to cater to the well being of the numerous senior dogs that are currently housed outdoors. Thanks to the generous donations of our contributors, Straydog continues to grow and expand. With this growth and expansion our sanctuary is able to rescue and rehabilitate more dogs than ever before. Our adoption rate is at a all time high and with your help it will continue to grow. Marie and the crew, as well as all the rescues want to personally thank you. Without you, there's no us.

Caregiver Chelsea reports:
Yesterday we had two new dogs come in under extremely sad circumstances, one of whom I immediately fell in love with. I got to spend some more time with Sugar Bear today and she's such an amazing girl! My heart broke for her, I really wish there were a way I could explain everything that's going on to her, and tell her just how loved she will be with us.

Caregiver Destiny reports:
Dez is the sweetest pitty pup of all time. With her cute little pig grunts and her short and stocky build, she could not be any more beautiful, and she also has the best personality. She’s been limping a bit here lately, maybe from all the jumping she does, from being so excited to go to the park or maybe it’s from when someone goes to visit her in her kennel. I guess she’s still a bit sore because it’s just a little limp and it’s not every day.

Caregiver Destiny reports:
CUTE PUPPY ALERT - Pebbles, Hershey, and Reese are the sweetest, cuddly pups ever. They love to be held and aren’t too rambunctious in the least. All they want is your love. With their beautiful eyes, soft coats and lovely personalities, they would make a wonderful addition to someone’s family.

Caregiver Chelsea reports:
It was rather bittersweet to walk in this morning and not see Luna. She was most definitely a shelter favorite and we're all going to miss her so much, but I couldn't be happier for her and her new family. I'm so grateful someone outside the shelter walls finally saw her in the same light that we all do.

May our beloved Demon Rest In Peace. He is no longer in pain and he lived a long wonderful life here at Straydog (16 years), he will be so missed by all of us here. He wasn’t always the nicest dog but he had a heart of gold and he loved his Mama Juana. He had a personality like no other and I know I’m sure going to miss “Getting his tail”.

Caregiver Ronnie reports:
Sunday night was a sad day for our Straydog family. Decisions had to be made, feelings had to be set aside, tears were shed and what is right and just had to prevail. For the past few weeks Mr. Demon displayed signs of significant pain and suffering, gradually getting worse day by day. At his age the arthritis became just too much for him to endure, he was a fighter and enjoyed his surroundings to the fullest. The multiple, daily trips to H1 park where he earned his name by being a little rambunctious and combative, was the highlight of his days. As he aged, his aggressive attitude eased into a peaceful, playful spirit. I can proudly say that he received the greatest life possible from our team of caregivers. So many of our rescues spend the entirety of their life with us (it's a great life) but as with everything in life the possibility of something greater is always present. You can help make things greater as well, visit Straydog.org or like us on Facebook and make your house a little greater by adding one of our deserving rescues. R.I.P. Buddy Demon.

Caregiver Chelsea reports:
All the dogs seem to be extra spunky when the cooler weather hits, but Miss Kayla was in full sass mode today. She was so energetic and playful that I could hardly even get her to slow down long enough to give her a cookie.

Caregiver Ronnie reports:
Yesterday was spent putting front boards on 54 outside dog houses. Front boards are applied to the front of each individual dog house during the winter months to ensure maximum warmth inside. Winterizing these houses helps to protect our babies from the frigid cold air and bitter winds that they sometimes face being outside during the colder months. The winterizing process starts with the team making sure that the dog houses are stuffed full of hay. The hay provides a warm bed inside the igloos for the doggies to bed in. Next step is to ensure that all of the heating lamps are installed and in working order. These lamps provide additional heat to the inside of each house. Last the front boards are placed on the shelter with a perfect accessible square for the dogs to enter and exit with ease. In the end their shelters provide adequate heat and warmth to make it a comfortable winter for them.

Caregiver Chelsea reports:
Jet is one of those dogs that give you no choice whatsoever as to whether or not you're going to love her. Her method of greeting someone is always a hug, and quite an amazing hug at that. She is by far one of the sweetest little souls I've ever had the pleasure of meeting.

Caregiver Destiny reports:
Here is Straydog’s newest resident, Dallas. I met him for the first time today and he completely stole my heart. He’s a bit weary of people at first and can be a little snippy, but it didn’t take him long to warm up to me.
