BILL ANNOUNCES: Straydog Radio Show covering the events of Saturday, April 16, 2016. Juana, what happened on Saturday?
JUANA: First of all, we have to make something clear. On yesterday’s radio show, we said that it was Saturday, April 15. It was actually Friday, April 15 and this is the report for Saturday, April 16.
There was a home visit planned for Tonto this Saturday. We were having an Adoption Day event and we can’t thank all of our wonderful volunteers enough. I won’t mention any names for fear of leaving someone out and they are all so wonderful. We couldn’t do this without each and every one of them. Before David came to gather the dogs who were attending Adoption Day, I wanted to take pictures of Tonto. I was pretty sure that he was going to get adopted. I wanted to take pictures of Marie, Banjo and Tonto in the park together. A few weeks ago, when we put Banjo with Tonto and Marie, Banjo was afraid of Tonto. He was the same way with Marie. He’s always been afraid of big dogs, but in no time at all, Tonto and Banjo were the best of friends. You can see how happy Banjo is in this photo. He loves Tonto and Marie.

After running and running, Tonto jumped in the pool.
Then Banjo, who has never liked the water, jumped in the pool and he was drinking the water. He only went in, because Tonto was in there.
Look at Tonto’s beautiful eyes!
There they are running. They are amazing!
Tonto and Banjo had a wonderful time together. Marie was content to sniff around. She’s not that playful. We were keeping our fingers crossed for Tonto, because he is such a wonderful dog and he deserves a good home. I can let you know that he was adopted. Banjo and Marie also deserve good homes. They are such wonderful dogs and we will always be here for them. After his park time, I walked Tonto to a small kennel, so he could dry out. I brushed him, before he went to his new home. He is so loving. He has the best personality and he’s such a good boy. His family has reported that they are enjoying him and that he is such a wonderful, wonderful dog.
We want thank DJ’s wife Katrina because she likes to volunteer here. She had the day off from work and she came to help. In this photo she was raking Fred and Ethel’s kennel. She loves dogs and they love and accept her. We had to put Ethel in the feeding gate, because she wants all of the attention. She’s jealous of Fred getting attention and Katrina was petting Fred.
There’s DJ working in kennels.
There’s Tyler. He was still working in Kayla and Collin’s new shelter.
We introduced Snickers and Luis in the park on Friday. So far, so good. There they are in the Beemer Park. They are still doing very well together.
Jazzie’s kennelmate Luigi is in H2 and he will be having surgery on Tuesday, so we reintroduced Jazzie and Skylar. They have lived side by side in separate kennels and shared a fence line and they have dug into each other’s kennel several times, but they had never live together before. We put them together them on Friday and they are doing very well together.
We moved Wup and put him in Skylar’s kennel. Charlie-dog has also used that kennel, because it’s a small kennel. Even though there was some barking through the fence, Skylar and Jazzie gave up. Wup was good and he never really barked at them.
Wayne was the walker in Beemer Park. There he is taking Skylar and Jazzie to the park.
David Rentz came down and we got the dogs ready for Adoption Day. Tonto was number one. Charlie the Cat came out and met us. I asked David to wait and see how Tonto would react to Charlie the Cat. Neither Charlie nor Tonto showed any aggression. So Tonto is good with cats. He didn’t pay any attention to Charlie and he just kept on walking.
Fletcher and Speck also went to Adoption Day. This is Speck on her way to the van.
Daylight went to Adoption Day too. There she is with her kennelmate Chip.
Shelby was walking Daylight to the van. She was walking on her back legs, because she was pulling on Shelby to get to the van. She was hopping like a bunny rabbit. She loves to go to Adoption Day.
George Jr. was the walker in Pat Arnold Park. There he is taking Blondie and Tobi back to their kennel.
We had a good day and our crew was following our routine. Shelby was working in Beto and Rowdy’s kennel.
Luis and Snickers were enjoying the day.
DJ and his wife Katrina were caregiving Talena. Volunteer Katrina is such a good person and she does a wonderful job. If she ever needed a job, she would be great. All of the dogs really like her.
There’s Newly playing in the park.
We had some unexpected visitors. Tina Hampton, who is a rescuer at Happy Tails, brought a friend and came to visit us. They were going to an open house at Black Beauty Ranch, when Tina realized that they were passing by and they stopped to visit. We were about to do our afternoon feeding. We got a little behind, but we were able to get caught up. We are always happy to see a friend, but we discourage visitors during our 6 a.m. and 2 p.m. feedings. But no one ever came to visit at 6 a.m. We welcomed them in and walked them around the shelter. It was a quick walk, because they knew that we were busy at that time.
I brought Tina to visit blind and deaf Colt. Tina is in red.
I brought Tina to visit blind and deaf Colt. Tina is in red.
I asked Tina, if she remembered him, because she brought him to us. He was born blind and deaf and she didn’t have experience with that type of dog. She asked us to take him. At that time, we had Jack, Jill and Conrad. They were all deaf, but Jack and Jill could see a little bit and so can Conrad. That makes a huge difference. We lost Jill and the Blantons adopted Jack, but we still have Conrad. Thankfully, we were able to help Tina and take Colt in. Colt does so wonderfully well. He is amazing! He goes to the park and he can run in the park and he knows his schedule. We do everything on a schedule and the dogs know the timing of everything. He knows when he goes to the park and when it’s time to eat. He can sniff, when someone new is nearby. He knew right away that I was with new people.
Then we walked around and brought them to see everyone in H1. Tina’s friend Pam was very impressed with our shelter. I also introduced Tina to Charlie-dog and told her about his Muscular Dystrophy and how he is on a feeding tube. They also met Tuffy. He’s probably enjoying his last few weeks, but he’s hanging in there and eating cookies from Pam’s hand. Tuffy has lung cancer.
There’s Charlie going to the park wearing an ecollar in the evening after they left.
There’s Charlie walking all of the way down the ramp.
We don’t put him on a leash anymore. He follows us. He likes to pee on the tree.
Then he walks to the park.
That was our day.
BILL: We’ll be back again shortly with another report from Straydog.
