JUANA: We had two. It was a good day and a chilly day. It was cold! Everything happened so quickly that morning and I didn’t have a chance to get the camera out and take pictures of David. David had a regular Adoption Day event in Mesquite. He took four dogs. He took Lizzy, Reyna and PoPo and he also took Splinter for the first time.
It was also the first time that Straydog and Ragtag Rescue held an adoption event at Morton Clinic in Athens.
Before we left for Adoption Day in Athens, we took pictures of our crew. We had a full crew. Our nephew Juan Manuel came to Straydog with me and he helped Zoe with some walks.
BILL: I thought Thunder was Shadow.
JUANA: No, Shadow was another dog. Shadow was returned once and then he was adopted. The second time he was adopted into a great home and he stayed.
BILL: The adoption fee is to make sure that people can take care of the dog later. $150 is nothing compared to what you have to spend over the years at the vet or for food, etc. If people get upset at $150, that means they aren’t planning on taking the dog to the vet or feeding their dog good food. We don’t make any money on this. It doesn’t even pay for what we have already done. We get the dogs spayed and give them all of their shots and put them on heartworm prevention and get them treated for fleas and feed them good food. That’s why Pat raised the adoption fee. It used to be $75 and she raised it to $150 for that reason. She thought that, if someone wants to adopt a dog, they have to have the money to continue to care for the dog. The $150 is just a symbol. Sometimes we waive the fee, if we know that it’s a great home. We’ll tell the people not to worry about it. Then the people usually insist on giving us the $150 anyway and sometimes more.
This is Autumn.
I asked Jacob who was at the shelter to come to the Ragtag adoption event at noon and take over for me. Then I went back to the shelter to prepare the dogs’ medicine and prepare the food for the dogs in the hospitals. The crewmembers, who were left at the shelter, weren’t trained to do that. It was George and Ronnie’s day off and Shelby had to attend her Pawpaw’s funeral. Shelby’s grandfather was Lacie’s uncle too. We couldn’t go to the funeral, because Bill was sick and we couldn’t cancel the Ragtag Adoption Day. Everyone understands that our commitment to the dogs is 24/7, 365.
BILL: We’ll be back soon with another report from Straydog.
